about

Sum // Parts is a collection of eight original songs composed by Dhaivat and performed by Dhaivat Jani PLUS. Each of the eight songs is an expression of a human emotion felt by each of us at some point in time.

The spectrum that Sum // Parts offers musically as an album, ranges from Dhaivat’s early young days, immersed in Indian classical music, to his contemporary life, having strong influences of jazz music, and everything in between. Sum // Parts is a tally of the parts of the life that Dhaivat has lived so far, starting from his life growing up in India to his migration to Canada, and everything in between including but not limited to the struggles, the hustle, the joy, the tears, the fights, the victories, the ups, the downs, the spirit, and the smiles.

These eight songs have accomplished their journey from their birth in Dhaivat’s heart (and brain) to being out in the world through the contribution of amazing musicians of Dhaivat Jani PLUS. Each song of Sum // Parts is the aggregation of the unique voices that each musician has brought to the mix as an artist and as a human being.

While each of the compositions brings a different colour with it individually, as a sum, the album delivers a multicoloured arc of experiences.

“Day 21” and “Peshkaar” carry Indian classical nuances with the compositions keeping the North Indian rhythms at their nucleus.

Translation of human experience and emotions into a musical piece can be felt through the compositions like “change is the only constant”, “Even If” and “Pulwama”.

Sprinkling a dash of rock influences from Dhaivat’s musical journey into the album, “Unchain” and “It Might Rain” stimulate the listeners’ rock taste(ear) buds while still keeping improvisation at its core.

“Kaleidoscope”, an equally and differently unique part of the sum that this album is, brings a novel listening experience through the polyrhythmic arrangements inspired by African rhythms, while still threading an under-running groove to bob your head to.

Sum // Parts aims and hopes to convey the expression to the listener, with which they are performed and produced, with minimal loss of emotion.
